The XML Schema is a specification from the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) that provides a way of defining the structure, content, and interpretation of XML documents. The XML Schema defines the data types that can be associated with XML elements and attributes. It also describes the structure of the contents of XML documents, and defines rules for governing schema validation. Based on these features, the XML Schema is able to enforce data integrity and compatibility among XML documents.
Because XML schemas are XML documents themselves, they can be managed by XML authoring tools.
